Commentaires : Don Walker redid the orchestrations for "The Carousel Waltz" during the run. It had originally been scored by Robert Russell Bennett. Bennett's version (although abridged) can be heard on the cast recording of this production. The partitur for this version, however, is missing (only 6 instrumental parts have been located).
Robert Russell Bennett was asked by Richard Rodgers to do the orchestrations. At the time, Bennett was busy working in radio. He did find time to score the first two numbers: "The Carousel Waltz" and "You're a Queer One, Julie Jordan/When I Marry Mister Snow." Don Walker was asked to do the rest.
Walker signed on, but he was busy at the time with a musical for which he was composing the score, Memphis Bound. For assistance, he called on Hans Spialek and Stephen Jones to do some numbers. Joe Glover also helped out by putting together the Entracte shortly before the New York opening. Major numbers orchestrated by the others included "When the Children Are Asleep (Spialek) and "This Was a Real Nice Clambake," "The Highest Judge of All" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (Jones). Spialek and Jones also orchestrated incidental bits and reprises.
After Memphis Bound opened, Rodgers asked Walker to rescore the two numbers scored by Bennett. Walker's job was made difficult because Rodgers asked him to score "The Carousel Waltz" in such a way that the orchestration could be played both by full-size symphony orchestras and the 39-player orchestra being used in the Broadway production. Walker never rescored "You're a Queer One, Julie Jordan," but he did do "When I Marry Mister Snow" in addition to "The Carousel Waltz."
Bennett's orchestrations for the first two numbers are heard on the original cast recording as Walker had not yet had a chance to orchestrate them.
Walker never reorchestrated the numbers and incidental bits done by Spialek, Jones, and Glover.
When the show first opened, the playbill included the following notice:

Cole Porter’s Nymph Errant opened at the Manchester Opera House in 1933 and the crowds were so huge that special police had to be drafted in to control them. The audience included Noël Coward and Douglas Fairbanks Jnr, with whom Gertrude Lawrence was having an affair at the time. The show, based on a book by James Laver, a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum, traced the heroine’s travels around the world while trying to lose her virginity. Gertie appeared in four of the shows six long scenes and closed the show exhorting everyone to ‘Experiment’ with life. Perhaps because the episodic nature of the plot made it more of a revue than a musical, reviews of the show were cautious. But no one had any doubts about Lawrence’s performance or that of Elisabeth Welch, who stopped the show with her rendering of Solomon. Their captivating performances can still be heard on recordings made at the time.

Commentaires : Il est probable que même Richard Rodgers et Oscar Hammerstein II ont été surpris par l’accueil enthousiaste réservé à l’Oklahoma!. Hammerstein était dans une creux de sa carrière avec une série de musicals ratés (Gentlemen Unafraid [1938], Very Warm for May [1939] et Sunny River) et Rodgers composait de la musique pour la première fois sans son collaborateur de longue date, le parolier Lorenz Hart. Et au lieu d’un musical chic en temps de guerre traitant de sujets d’actualité tels que le rationnement, les priorités et les numéros de carnaval sud-américains, ils ont sorti une tranche d’Americana basée sur une pièce presque oubliée du début des années ‘30. De plus, le musical n’avait aucune star dans sa distribution: il n’y avait pas de Merman, de Jolson ou de Cantor, et à la place le musical proposait des interprètes relativement inconnus tels que Alfred Drake, Joan Roberts et Celeste Holm. Et l’intrigue? Légère, réduite à l’essentiel: le premier acte traitait du dilemme de l’héroïne de choisir un garçon pour l’accompagner à un pique-nique. Et le deuxième acte a eu la témérité de tuer l’un des personnages majeurs et, en plus, le tueur est le héros du musical. Mais tous ces éléments se sont unifiés pour le plus grand plaisir du public et Oklahoma! est non seulement devenu le musical ayant la plus longue série de la saison, mais aussi la plus longue de la décennie; et quand Oklahoma! a fermé en 1948, il a était devenu le musical ayant la plus longue série de l’histoire du théâtre américain, un titre qu’il a conservé jusqu’à ce que My Fair Lady (1956) le dépasse en 1961.

Commentaires : La version originale d’Oklahoma! s’est jouée à Broadway de 1943 à 1948. Le musical a connu, en 1951, un ‘Return Engagement’ à Broadway lorsque la compagnie du National Tour s’est arrêtée au Broadway Theatre pour un engagement limité avec Ridge Bond (Curly) et Mary Marlo (Aunt Eller). Les deux ont repris leurs rôles pour la deuxième reprise à Broadway, qui a été produite par le New York City Center of Music and Drama, et les ont rejoints par Florence Henderson (Laurey) et Barbara Cook (Ado Annie).
Le revival a ouvert pendant ce que le maire de New York, Vincent R. Impellitteri, a proclamé être «la semaine Rodgers et Hammerstein». Pas moins de quatre musicals du duo se jouaient à l’époque: outre cet Oklahoma! du City Center, les productions originales de South Pacific, The King and I et de Me and Juliet étaient toujours à l’affiche.
Presse : Même si le musical avait été joué vue à New York deux ans plus tôt, les critiques étaient généralement heureux de revoir cette «vieille connaissance». Mais Brooks Atkinson dans le New York Times a estimé que le revival manquait de «crépitement et d’assurance» et ne rendait pas «pleinement justice» à l’œuvre. Il a également noté que le Dream ballet était dansé de manière «bâclée».
Mais Walter Kerr dans le New York Herald Tribune a assuré à ses lecteurs que c’était encore une belle matinée («A Beautiful mornin’»). De plus, selon lui, la Laurey jouée par Florence Henderson était magnifique et il ne s’attendait jamais à voir une meilleure Laurey que la sienne.
John McClain dans le New York Journal-American a rapporté que pendant que l’orchestre jouait l’ouverture, le public a commencé à «applaudir involontairement» et lorsque le rideau s’est levé et que Ridge Bond a commencé à chanter «Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'», ce fut un vrai bonheur. Il pensait que Ridge Bond était l’égal de ses prédécesseurs et a déclaré que Florence Henderson était «assurée». Mais il n’a pas été conquis par les capacités de Barbara Cook dans le rôle d’Ado Annie.
Robert Coleman a conclu sa critique favorable dans le Daily Mirror en notant que le prix le plus élevé de trois dollars pour Oklahoma! était une «vraie chance de divertissement».

Commentaires : Il s’agit cette fois d’un véritable revival. Heureusement, il n’a pas mené à une réinterprétation radicale de Rodegrs et Hammerstein. Le maïs était encore aussi haut que l’œil d’un éléphant et le blé sentait toujours bon – comme le disent les chansons – mais il s’agissait d’un Oklahoma! légèrement plus sombre, surtout dans les interprétations de Christine Andreas (Laurey) et de Martin Vidnovic (Jud). La Laurey d’Andreas était plus sombre que d’habitude, et cette fois-ci, le ballet «Laurey Makes Up Her Mind» semblait vraiment vouloir parler de quelque chose.
Un choix entre Curly ou Jud? Normalement, il n’y a pas de concours, et clairement dans le monde réel, Jud n’aurait aucune chance avec Laurey. Mais dans le casting de Vidnovic, il y avait maintenant un Jud que nous n’avions jamais vu auparavant: un étalon romantique qui fait passer un peu Curly pour un indompté. L’interprétation frappante de Vidnovic était chargée d’énergie sexuelle frustrée, et il était clair d’après sa performance que lorsque Jud était seul dans sa cabane, il faisait plus que simplement regarder les cartes postales françaises clouées au mur au-dessus de sa couchette. Mais ici, Jud avait une vraie présence, et « Lonely Room », magnifiquement et douloureusement interprétée par Vidnovic a fait de cette chanson généralement oubliée de la partition une déclaration puissante et mémorable du statut d’outsider de Jud.
